Islands in the sun
Summer Dreaming
It is August, it should be warm and sunny. Well, it is not. After the summer we had last year, I think everybody was expecting the same this year. Somebody told me that they would not put anything in pots because they need to be watered regularly and with too much heat it is not a good idea. I'm glad I did not follow this example.
Even though I'm happy about the rain for nature and the garden, I still would like to have a bit more summer. There is nothing we can do about it but dream of Islands in the Sun with palm trees, white sandy beaches and deep blue sea. I'm actually not that type of holiday person, lying on a beach all day and roasting in the sun. It is not good for the skin and I would get really fidgety and bored. I would start to explore my surroundings and probably find the coconut palm with its amazing fruits. And an amazing fruit it is.
It is actually a nut and it has many uses not only as food. The leaves of the palm get used to roof huts and the fibre of the ripe nut is manufactured into all sorts of mats and rugs. I've learned that components of the whole tree are used in native medicine as well but let's stay with the fruit.
The coconut is a very nutrient dense fruit. It contains on average 638 kcal, 62g of fat of which 53.4g are saturated, 6.4g of sugar (this is quite sweet), 15.8g of fibre and 5.6g of protein. You can get coconut milk which can be the liquid in the fruit or the creamed flesh in cans. There is also coconut water which is the clear liquid inside the green fruit. You can also get coconut flour which I find a bit hard to swallow, so I don't use it anymore.
But there is also coconut oil which is a staple in my household. It is often praised as the savior of the brain because it posses healing properties which other dietary oils do not have. You should make sure that you get organic extra virgin oil which has been ethically sourced. I used it in baking but mainly for the face creams I do. I could not do without it.
You might have guessed that there is also a Homoeopathic remedy made out of coconut oil which is called Cocos nucifera. So all the wonderful properties of the coconut oil can be obtained by Homoeopathy if it is the best matching remedy, but Cocos nucifera is mainly used to optimize body weight. Please note that Homoeopathy is a very individual medicine and self prescribing is not advised particularly in this instance. As Homoeopaths we do not treat conditions or diseases, we treat a person. So if you want to give Homoeopathy a go give me a ring on 07813 195468. Looking forward to hear from you.
